Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2014) by Kyle L — 05 Jul 2014
Deliver Us From Evil is a great supernatural exorcism Horror film that delivers so many goods and it managed to work really well and I would say that this is one of 2014's best Horror films since Mike Flanagan's Oculus.
This movie is about a young detective name Ralph Sarchie who teams up with a priest in solving a series of disturbing and violent crimes in New York City. Soon Ralph Sarchie and the priest must stop all of the evil forces that are terrorizing the city before the entire city goes into chaos.
I love this movie to be honest and me and my parents had a great time watching this film and in my point of view it is one of the best Horror films of 2014 since Oculus. What makes Deliver Us From Evil a great Horror film is that the whole film has an incredibly unsettling and eerie atmosphere from start to finish and I love how this movie raise the bar of Horror films and this movie seriously makes Exorcism movies go in a very dark direction and it is one of the darkest Horror films since Sinister, The Conjuring and Insidious 1 and 2 along with the Evil Dead remake.
The other things I like about this film is that the whole movie not only acts as a Horror film but also as a Dark and Depraving Detective Thriller with Horror elements and I love that idea a lot. The third thing I like about this film is that the movie has loads of super scary and haunting plus suspenceful and creepy moments that seriously freaked me out and I'm serious director Scott Derrickson managed to scare audiences for real with this film and luckily he doesn't bore the audience with so many used up elements that we've basically seen before in past Horror films and they are not in your face scares at all because Scott Derrickson seriously managed to scare the audience with loads of tricks that I've ever seen in a Horror movie(Scenes with the possessed soldier, The frightening zoo sequence, The creepy Asylum scene and the disturbing yet suspenceful Exorcism finale that will haunt you forever in your everyday life and my goodness the nasty foot eating sequence in that scene is so icky and gross it disturbs me a lot).
While the last things I like about this movie is that the film has a superb soundtrack from Sinister and Hellraiser 1 and 2 composer Christopher Young and the soundtrack by Christopher Young is darker than what you can expect if Christopher Young's soundtrack in Sinister is frightening and Haunting then his soundtrack for this film is dark, brooding and atmospheric and I love it a lot.
Now the acting is outstanding and I love the performances of the casts in this film both Eric Bana and Edgar Ramirez deliver superb performances as Ralph Sarchie and the priest. While the rest of the casts deliver the same thing and I love it a lot.
Director Scott Derrickson did a magnificent job with his work on this movie and its so cool to see him doing better and better as time flies and he seriously managed to show his proof when he made both Sinister and this film and I also love his past films like The Exorcism Of Emily Rose and Hellraiser: Inferno and I have to say this Scott Derrickson you are a genius like James Wan.
Overall Deliver Us From Evil is a superb and entertaining plus atmospheric and haunting Horror film from Start to finish. This movie gets a 10/10.
