Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2014) by Wade A — 05 Jul 2014
Scott Derrickson once again displays the expertise of his craft by carefully meshing unlikely genres and using gifted A-list actors like Bana and Ramirez in a story featuring compelling real-world, three-dimensional characters and dilemmas of love, guilt, calling and belief.
The atmosphere and scares are there and are executed decently if somewhat unoriginally (I did tire of the flickering light effect after a while), but the scares ultimately aren't what make this film tick.
That exists in the stuff lying under the surface, the characters and complexity that make a story work.
