Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2014) by Jianred F — 08 Jul 2014
Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose are two films that pretty much scared the shit out of me. However, Deliver Us From Evil failed to reach the bar set by the two films from the same director.
Maybe it was because of these high expectations that made me blind to what little bit of redeeming factor there is in this film (whatever that is), but I found myself bored half the time. Or most of the time.
It made me jump, yes, but it didn't come to the point that I want to look away or cover my eyes which actually happened in the aforementioned two films above. And the little tricks they used quickly got old.
For example, the flickering lights didn't managed to do its job properly. Sure, it was good the first few times but the continuous use of it the entire length made it lose its magic. It was supposed to signal us something is lurking in the dark but I reach the point where I'm just, "Okay.".
There's also that one where the possessed keeps on appearing everywhere, seriously, that's kinda lame. And I don't even want to go to what happened to Jane. The film made it looked like another ravenous enemy is on lose then a few scenes after, she's dead. Okay.
The exorcism scene was cool though. I found myself watching everything but I missed the point of even having the other police officer on the other side of the glass. I thought that maybe the evil spirit will find a way to transfer to him once it escaped Santino, but na-da because after the exorcism, it was the ending.
For at least a two-hour film, the wrap-up feels like it was hurried. They were united and suddenly Sgt. Sarchie is swearing his oath. I didn't feel anything other than, "That's it?".
I won't say it's forgettable. Because believe me when I say that I will remember the money I wasted on buying the ticket for this. The least I could do for myself, is to at least remember how much of a let down the film is and never fell for another nicely made trailer again. Yes.
