Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2014) by Keith A — 08 Jul 2014
What could have been a refreshing take on the genre (how often do you see a paranormal buddy cop flick?) was squandered and rushed to make a quick buck. Eric Bana is terrific as always. There were moments where I laughed and had good fun.
But alas, it goes from enjoyable dumb to just plain dumb. Olivia Munn is teeeerrible and her character adds nothing. The film is borderline Christian propaganda. But the worst sin Deliver Us commits is probably the overlong, tedious exorcism scene.
Strobe lights and yelling and rain, oh boy. The movie can be summed up by its running motif of The Doors songs in the soundtrack; there's something genuinely cool there but they should have tried harder to make it more relevant.
Like I said, it's rushed. It was originally called "Beware the Night" and it was supposed to be released in 2015, but they just slapped a generic title on it and used the "INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY!" gimmick and it was good to go.
Wait til it comes on Netflix.
