Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2014) by Patrick K — 24 Aug 2014
Like "Sinister", this is great on atmosphere, and the Bronx is portrayed as a nightmare dystopian hell-hole (where it never stops raining).
The film starts really well but, like so many recent films like this, the lack of a decent plot kills the scare. This could have been a really scary film, with battle-scarred demonically possessed Iraq vets writhing around urban NYC. However, it loses its way and ends with a clichà (C)d worn out exorcism for no real reason (I won't spoil it). I've seen countless cinematic exorcisms, and this one isn't really that great.
It's an OK film, but it could have been great. It just didn't light my fire (see the film..).
