Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2014) by Rebeccah W — 07 Nov 2014
I wasn't too sure about Eric Bana carrying a horror flick. He's a decent actor, yes, but a horror star? Eh. I was pleasantly surprised with his performance. It won't win any awards, but it worked for this role. I would've really enjoyed more horror and less story/character development in this movie. I really wasn't scared all that much at any point. I'm easily caught by even the cheapest of jump scares, but there weren't that many to begin with in this movie.
The story is very loosely based off a "true story" of an NYPD detective (?). I enjoy scary movies based off real life, because it can add an extra element of horror knowing that something similar to this actually happened. I don't think they really capitalized on this, though, and it didn't add anything knowing there was a kernel of truth in all this.
Definitely never going to be a favorite horror flick for me, but I wasn't disappointed after walking out of the theater. It was slightly better than a "meh" for me.
