"Deliver Us From Evil" should have been called "Deliver This True Story Back to the Morgue" because I didn't believe this movie for a second. It is the first horror movie in history to feature comedian Joel McHale as a tough New York cop. Despite a few scares, "Deliver Us From Evil" doesn't deliver suspense, thrills or even a few dark laughs but what it does deliver is cop movie cliches. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, "Deliver Us From Evil" looks like a bad episode of "CSI: NY". Did I mention that this movie is based on a true story? Trust me guys, don't believe it.
"Deliver Us From Evil" stars Eric Bana as Ralph Sarchie, a New York City cop who has a beautiful wife (Olivia Munn) and daughter. He and his partner Butler (McHale) are investigating a series of gruesome murders, Ralph believes that the victims were possessed by the devil and he soon teams up with a Castilian priest named Mendoza (Edgar Ramirez) to fight off against the supernatural forces who are terrorizing his family. The demons were first exposed by three U.S. Marines who were serving in Iraq. The three soldiers were possessed by the devil and the last remaining member of the trio, Santino (Sean Harris) wants to kill Ralph's wife and daughter.
Director Scott Derrickson made a name for himself when he directed "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" in 2005 and "Sinister" in 2012. Both of them were effective supernatural thrillers but "Deliver Us From Evil" is not in the same league. "Deliver Us From Evil" tries to be both a grisly horror movie and a cop drama but it fails on both levels. I wanted to give this movie some holy water because it is just ripping off both "The Exorcist" and "Seven". Even fans of this genre will likely to say, "What a load of BS!".
If you found this movie to be scary, maybe you need to find an exorcist.
