Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2014) by Mark W — 08 Feb 2015
"Deliver Us From Evil" must have had promise on the drawing board, but the finished production forces us to wait until the last 30 minutes before we see it gain any kind of sustained momentum.
In its early stages this attempt is long on gross (insects wallpapering an entire apartment, a gutted cat hung upon a crucifix, and a dead man with exploding intestines as blowflies make their way out of the body) .
Unfortunately, it's short on build-up and features only slight character development. In the end it does both only partially and does neither of them well. While Bana is convincing as an NYPD cop and shares a good comedic camaraderie with his partner, "Deliver" ends up thin and stereotypical (complete with Pop-Goes-The-Weasel music and all).
This film is fair at best and the finale exorcism just can't stop it from disintegrating.
