Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2006) by Lawrence A — 16 May 2008
"I saw the collar and I instinctly trusted them". This phrase haunts the footage of Amy Berg's contriversal documentary about the Catholic Church. Focusing on one convicted case of Child abuse, Berg uses testimonies and reports to script her tale.
However, where this film sets itself apart is by having interviews with the convicted Paedophile himself. Whilst unsettling, it gives the documentary a certain edge. Ultimatley, we symapthise with his victims more, because we can see him, the alienating effect of his crimes with his appearance.
Where the film lacks is by lacking a clear, definable ending, with Berg going down the Michael Moore approach (similar to Sicko) which actually diminishes the film's climatic impact. However, this film is essential, due to Berg's inspired contrasting the abuser's dialogues with his victims, which creates a fascinating, razor sharp insight into a world of intrigue, hidden through faith alone, leaving most with doubt in the divine.
