Review of Deliver Us from Evil (2006) by Darren G — 10 Jan 2011
'Deliver Us From Evil' is not an easy film to watch, but despite its depressing and shocking subject matter it is compelling and powerful, thanks to its simple and straight-forward style.
This is illustrated most of all by the matter-of-fact way in which 'Deliver Us From Evil' lets convicted pedophile priest Oliver O'Grady speak for himself. O'Grady is charming and open - which makes him and his gall (especially when he writes to his victims and seriously suggests meeting them to explain why he abused them) all the more revolting.
As well, there are the damning video depositions of members of the Catholic Church who showed in court that they failed to deal with O'Grady and his crimes; and some of O'Grady's victims and their parents unflinchingly tell their stories (one scene, in which the parents of one victim describe how they discovered that their daughter was abused by O'Grady, is especially stunning).
