Review of Deliver Us from Evil (1973) by Nick D — 29 Sep 2007
This is a stunning, scary, unbelivably sadistic movie that is in turns honest and dramatic. It's the story of Father Oliver O'Grady, convicted child molester, who was moved from parish to parish in Northern California in the '70s, each time being moved because of another crime.
There are extensive interviews with O'Grady (an element of that interview is why I gave it 4 stars), and also interviews with the families hurt by O'Grady's acts. The reason I don't like the interview with O'Grady is because it's set up: the interview is conducted outside a playground swarming with little children: O'Grady's dream.
This is an obvious touch included by the filmmakers to freak us out and make us think. But the rest of the film does that just fine: Ms. Berg does not need to push it any farther towards insanity than the story already is.
