Review of Deliver Us from Evil (1973) by David S — 21 Oct 2009
It's good to see documentaries taking their rightful place on the shelves of the DVD rental shops at last. Perhaps we have the grand standing Michael Moore to thank for this change. Deliver Us From Evil is the disturbing story of a Catholic priest who was a serial pedophile who abused untold numbers of children.
Then we have the hierarchy of the church that shifted the priest around from parish to parish, fully aware of the abuse. I'm not sure which is more odious. The priest abused the children and then the church turned a blind eye It's a startling, deeply disturbing documentary which all Catholics should make a point of seeing.
The Catholic Church and its male dominated, stonewalling hierarchy have much to answer for. The heartbreaking personal stories documented in this film are incredibly powerful. One can only hope that documentaries such as Deliver Us From Evil will cause a groundswell of anger amongst Catholics.
That's why I'm so pleased docs are getting the recognition they deserve.
