Review of Delicatessen (1991) by Al M — 04 Aug 2010
Delicatessen is a delightfully surreal and hilariously dark piece of fantastic cinema from the team of Jeunet and Caro (City of Lost Children, Amerlie, etc.), who always inject their own bizarre aesthetic blend of the humorous, the disturbing, and the downright strange.
In a seemingly post-apocalyptic future in which meat has become a rarity, one butcher feeds the people in the apartment building he owns through cannibalism. As we watch one crazy character after another deal with their own existential delimmas, Jeunet and Caro unfold the tender love story of a handyman and the butcher's daughter.
In a world torn apart by hunger, Delicatessen explores the kernel that lies at the heart of the human, the hope that we can forge relationships and find meaning even in the darkest of environments.
