Review of Delicatessen (1991) by Stephen O — 23 May 2011
Delicatessen is the story a butcher who kills his tenants to feed the rest of the residents. The first few minutes of the movie give you a glimpse of the oddity ahead. Marc Caro & Jean-Pierre Jeunet implement some interesting angles in the course of the film.
The scene where Dominique Pinon is making bubbles for the children was very endearing. Marie-Laure Dougnac is quite charming as the butcher's daughter. Jean-Claude Dreyfus was very sympathetic and at the same time ruthless as the butcher.
Dominique and Marie perform very well together. The movie is quite funny, although it's "black comedy", it's still amusing. The soundtrack for the movie really sets the mood. You feel the walls closing in, but they also use it for giggles.
The visual fx are quite good, the sets are well designed. The only downside to the whole film was the story was never really expanded upon. We are never told why we hate the Troglodytes, or why everyone has resorted to eating people.
I can only assume some kind of famine broke out forcing a survival of the fittest way of life. The film in general was rather enjoyable, I did not regret one minute of it and would suggest it highly.
