Review of Delicatessen (1991) by Mike S — 29 Jul 2011
Beautiful! Jeunet and Caro's stunning, unforgettable masterpiece perfectly blends horrifically dark humor with wonderfully superficial quirk. Hitting every note perfectly, from Carlos D'alessio's wonderful score, Darius Khondji's miserable and sticky cinematography and the presence of Europe's most underrated actor - the lovely Dominique Pinon, Delicatessen draws you hypnotically into it's world of cannibalistic violence and secret romance as Pinon's retired Circus entertainer is groomed by Jean-Claude Dreyfus' vile and homicidal landlord and wooed by his daughter - the charmingly blind Marie-Laure Dougnac.
By the time the Vegan warriors arrive to clumsily intervene, the scene is set for one of the most balls-out insane, visually satisfying showdowns in movie history. Superb!
