Review of Delhi Belly (2011) by Sabrina I — 14 Jul 2011
I've never been a big fan of toilet humor. The two or three bathroom scenes I felt were not needed. Perhaps its just not my kindof humor however the rest of the film is quite amusing. Its refreshing to see a mainstream Bollywood film that doesn't hold back on anything. The interactions between the character's are natural and never seem forced. The film flows nicely from one scene to the next.
I know the makers are trying to appeal to the youth of India and young Bollywood fans in general. They succeeded in that. The film will be a turn off for many older Bollywood fans though but that's pretty much the state of Bollywood these days. There's films like Dabaag that have mass appeal and are made for a large audience while theres films like Delhi Belly made to appeal to only a certain segment. Some films converge the two like 3 idiots did though that film didnt work for me. You cant do things differently while also trying to keep your mainstream audience happy too because you will end up with a film that is only half serious, half authentic, half important. Which is why 3 idiots didnt work. Dehli Belly seems like a more honest attempt. The film is not perfect though. It could have been better. Less predictable. The humor could have been more mature and characters more memorable but it's a good step forward for Bollywood.
