Review of Déjà Vu (2006) by Scott C — 13 Sep 2012
Deja Vu is a very interesting case study on Tony Scott. Some people criticize this because it takes away from the science fiction aspect and turns it simply into a gritty detective story. While I recognize that argument... I disagree wholeheartedly. It's a Tony Scott movie! He's skill is creating tension and intensity. And that's the.
Point of Deja Vu. The time travel aspect isn't the main focus of the film like a Michael Crichton story... It simply is the reason why things are moving forward. Example. If it focused on the science fiction more, then Denzel choosing to go back in time would have been a nail biting moment. Instead, we pretty much know it's going to work in advance because the movie isn't focused on the time travel, but rather solving the crime. I want to see Denzel hunt down the bad guy, so therefore it's a guarantee the time travel will work. Overall, it's not perfect. Very slow going early on, and definitely hard to buy Paula Patton falling for Denzel. But it's great entertainment. The explosions are cool. And the person who came up with the idea of the time travel goggles chase with Denzel in the Hummer? Genius.
