Review of Definitely, Maybe (2008) by Brynn P — 11 Nov 2009
I just recently re-watched this movie, and I actually liked it a lot better than the first time I saw it funnily enough. I thought that this movie was rather a sweet, touching and romantic stepping stone for Ryan Reynolds, and what surprises me even more is that he's usually in action or fantasy/sci-fi films, and he does an amazingly great job doing something different like this. His performance was compelling and occasionally humorous and heartfelt, and I really like what he did: this film proves that he can act.
The acting was good. All the actors in this film did a decent job, but apart from the great job Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher and Abigail Breslin, everyone else just seemed decent enough as to what's required, just better than mediocre. Acting: 7.8/10.
The story was sort of original to me and the relationships are formulated quite unique and special manner; I liked the father-daughter relationship the most; it was touching. The relationships that Reynolds' character had were actually devised in such a way that it is actually believable- real life people can have these sort of experiences, and in that sense of realism makes this film a worthwhile piece to view. Overall, the story is great and touching. 8.4/10.
This film has its faults, no doubt, often concerning with one minor plot hole, typical, but good, romantic and light music and an occasional mishap here or there, but I liked it enough to say that it just scrapes a 'great film' status, but only just. Flawlessness: 7.8/10.
All in all, a compelling romantic drama that really brings out sympathy and has a lot of heart that's able to grab my appreciation. Overall. 8/10.
