Review of Definitely, Maybe (2008) by Manny H — 10 Nov 2009
The average romantic comedy is usually very formulatic and predictable. Definitely, Maybe is none of those things and it walks away a champion because of it.
It stars Ryan Reynolds as a divorced father telling his adorable daughter, played by the charismatic Abigail Breslin, the story about his life before his eventual marriage to her mother.
In doing so, we relive the story in flashbacks that tell of his relationship with three different women (Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz, and Isla Fischer. He changes the women's names leaving his daughter (and the audience) left guessing which of these women is her mother.
At first glance this seems like it would be a train wreck of a film but it flows so smoothly that it's almost like watching three movies at once. Ryan has fantastic chemistry with all of his leading ladies and Breslin gives a memorable performance as his curious daughter.
Definitely, Maybe is what a romantic comedy should be: Smart, original, and well written while still being a heartwarming tale.
