Review of Defendor (2009) by Jarek M — 22 Apr 2010
This to me is an example of a little movie that could and did touch my heart thanks to the excellent performance of Woody Harrelson.Arthur Poppington,a construction worker by day, but by night becomes the hero Defendor(Woody Harrelson) who uses quick wit and bravery to fight thugs and searches for his arch-nemesis Captain Industry, whom he believes is responsible for the death of his mother.
Along the way, he gets into the trouble with crooked under cover cop,Chuck Dooney(Elias Koteas), but gains a little help from a friend Kat(Kat Dennings),a young prostitute with a heart of gold. The way the plot twists and turns from hero to drama is excellent and I do enjoy how it is told from a later prespective point that eventually reaches out to finish, which makes it one of those films easy, but thrilling to follow.
Woody Harrelson is simply amazing as his role as Arthur and does an excellent job at playing the delusional and kind side of the identity of Defendor, but doing a more serious Arthur while roaming the streets as Defendor.
Kat Dennings does an excellent job playin her charcter that helps Arthur and gives him more of a reason of showing his innocence. The action scenes are'nt amazing since this is an indie film, but are as riveting and brutal as those seen in Kick-ass, except Arthur can hold out on his own using his most hilarious weaopons ever used by a hero, wasps, slingshot, and marbles.
The depressing life of Arthur becomes in more clear view through flashbacks, but what really drived me to continue watching him try to be a super hero was he never seemed to quit even after getting a neck braced and shot.
Sure the way the movie looks make it look like an indie film, and its dark humor makes it less serious then how it actually is,you wont be disappointed by how this movie really shows a more grittier reality of what Kick-Ass tried to show, and thats from somone who loved that movie to death.
