Review of Defendor (2009) by Kevin R — 26 Aug 2011
He wanted to be punished. His eyes told me.
Arthur Poppington was orphaned as a youth after his mother unfortunately abandoned him and likely passed away. Arthur misinterprets a message from his grandfather that caption industry killed his mother. As Arthur gets older and stronger, he decides to become a super hero, Defendor, and seeks Caption Industry. A local pimp and gun trader fits the bill of Caption Industry and will suffer the wrath of Defendor.
"Who's that?".
"My father.".
"I didn't know you have a father.".
"Everyone has a father.".
Peter Stebbings delivers Defendor in his directorial debut. The storyline for this movie is similar to Kick Ass but not as clever, well written, or well delivered. The action scenes are entertaining and comical for the most part, and the acting is on par with the content. The cast includes Woody Harrelson, Kat Dennings, Sandra Oh, and Lisa Ray.
"I do think there's an issue of intellectual capacity here.".
Defendor is a movie I remember seeing previews for and being minimally interested to see. I saw this on Showtime a couple weeks ago and decided to DVR this film. Overall, there are several entertaining sequences and one or two funny lines, but this is not as good as similar films within the genre.
"That retard's unbelievable.".
Grade: C+.
