Review of Defendor (2009) by François C — 24 Apr 2010
I still can't quite decide what I think of this movie. Some parts are pretty funny and some parts are very moving. This movie is definitely more drama than comedy. To call it a dark comedy is even stretching it a little.
Harrelson is great, almost too great, because he doesn't let me laugh outright at what his "slow" character does. The director and writers really make us anxious and weary over trying to decide whether we should root for him to beat the bad guys or stop so he can't hurt himself or attack someone he shouldn't.
It's good, but it also makes for a movie that lacks some cohesion. In Kick-Ass for example, the writers eventually let us root with full force for the good guys. Here, we're not quite sure whose side we're suppose to be on.
