Review of Defendor (2009) by Do?Acan S — 28 Apr 2010
Despite it's kind of weak script and plot this movie was entertaining and fun to watch. Although a man with an I.Q. of 80 would probably not be as inventive or witty as Woody's characterization -- he would possibly lack impulse control or understand his own motivations for his behavior.
I'm not sure why Woody chose to play this character as so intelligent, maybe he was channeling the type of performance in "Charly"... I'm not sure... Since this movie is part parody of the superhero and part drama/tragedy this makes for what is usually a concoction that is usually a disaster.
Woody is a great actor and he is always wonderful when he's playing marginal or bizarre characters. So, he elevated what would have been a straight to video film into something worthwhile. The guy is so brilliant he seems intelligent even when he plays a nearly cognitively disabled man.
Everyone has loved Woody since he was on "Cheers"... If you catch one of those re-runs you of course notice his hairline and then you kind of see flashes of his wit and genious in even this TV show.
The director here is making his first film. Thank goodness he doesn't have all of the pressure on him like Kevin Smith ... So, maybe he'll learn and grow and find a better script next time. This film came from out of left field but was a pleasant surprise.
