Review of Deepwater Horizon (2016) by Frame R — 03 Apr 2018
I went to see Deepwater Horizon and the title is the deepest thing about it.
I'll keep this short for I don't have a lot to say about this film. I loved the previous Berg-Whalberg collaboration "Lone Survivor" which was both gritty, action packed and thrilling. This new film, however, settles for the unimpressive right from the first shot and scene and, boy, does it carry it out! From the bland romantic pairing, to the unremarkable cinematography, script or score, this film is averge as average can be. What annoys me the most is its structure, having 2 instead of 3 acts. There's nothing wrong with that kind of structure but it has to be justified. So its first act alternates between a good build-up with some good ideias and a moody yogurt commercial; and its second is just a jittery, unclear and unfearing escape from Michael Bay's wet dream. It just becomes so boring seeing explosion after explosion as we watch the protagonists barely leaving unscatted every step of the way. It's like the fire knows that it's in the film and wants to help build tension. Well, I don't see this film working and I also think that the story itself is not interesting enough to make a movie. It's also sickening how it doesn't have a motionless point of view on the oil industry: glorifying it at times in a cheesy American capitalist way. Well, I wasn't short, sorry. But unfortunately the movie wasn't either...
