Review of Deep Rising (1998) by Daniel S — 01 Jun 2008
Of all the words that come to mind when I think about this movie (unscary, unexciting, unoriginal), "bland" describes it the best. I've seen this movie before: the characters are one-dimensional archetypes straight out of comic books, the basic story comes from "Alien" (and "The Poseidon Adventure"), the monster looks a lot like the thing from "The Thing," and there wasn't a single scene that I didn't see coming.
I have to give Stephen Sommers some credit for realizing that he wasn't good enough to make a real action/horror movie and adding a lot of humor: if Treat Williams wasn't always cracking one liners, the movie probably would have been unforgivably boring.
