Review of Deep Impact (1998) by Gareth B — 25 Jul 2009
In my opinion, the best of the "asteroid heading towards Earth and everyone goes crazy" genre of films, this picture easily outstrips Armageddon because unlike the latter, the film actually has an emotional core.
The way the world responds to the oncoming disaster is also much more realistic, with some people simply resigned to the fate, whilst others fight to survive. There are probably too many characters to be going on with, but each has an emotional centre which makes them more empathic for the audience.
The graphics are pretty impressive, and at times can be quite harrowing. Perhaps the main flaw of the film is the unending Americanism of it all; in that despite all odds, the United States is able to rebound against a global crisis in winning style, whilst the rest of the world flounders in the darkness.
If perhaps one of these films could just examine the entire world during such an event, we might get something that is truly great. Until then, Deep Impact is the most impressive thing we have to be getting along with.
