Review of Deep Blue Sea (1999) by Nived N — 19 Mar 2010
I never had such fun while watching a shark films especially JAWS franchise, DEEP BLUE SEA directed by Renny Harlin is a neat packaged thriller which is assembled with Terror, horrifying sharks and stunning special effects.
Plot is simply ridiculous, A group of aquatic scientist living in a research center located in the middle of the sea. Dr. Susan McAlester (SAFFRON BURROW) research on the cure of alzheimer disease by testing on sharks. Unfortunately, the protein not only increases the intelligence of sharks, but also makes it smart and highly aggressive. This error leads the dangerously mutant sharks in chasing the victims and eating out one by one.
Screenplay is devoid of any common sense, the biggest problem of screenplay is that just because Sharks is smarter doesn't mean it contains loads of information. This was the flipside but The positive side is that IT IS UNPREDICTABLE, My favorite scene is the one where Samuel L Jackson gets pounced by the shark while giving survival speech to his colleagues. You never know what would happen, who will be eaten up next. This is the bright part which makes the movie more engaging and thrilling. Special effects are very impressive, the morphology of sharks are made superbly making it more real. Performance is decent from every cast, It's L.L COOL J who provides such comic relief as the cook.
Overall DEEP BLUE SEA is a cheesy yet fascinating thriller. Do enjoy this roller-caster ride with your group of friends.
