Review of Dedication (2007) by Paul R — 18 Feb 2008
Dark romantic comedies usually suffer from being unable to split their content equally between types. Too much darkness, romance, or comedy can ruin the effect. This movie comes very close to success, but the writing doesn't give Mandy Moore's character enough opportunity to develop as an object of affection for a crazy man.
If the brief glimpses of Lucy (Moore) being able to handle Henry's (Crudup's) attacks and retaliate were fleshed out, we could better see how the level playing field between the neurotic and the nice girl would allow their attractions to develop.
Despite that weak aspect, the twisted humor and unexpected moments grabbed my attention and sustained my interest so I was invested in hoping for their happy ending. One of the high-points comes early when Henry tries to shock a little girl at a book signing.
