Review of Dedication (2007) by Brent R — 25 Apr 2008
The only good thing I can say about this pretentious little movie is the performances were exceptional. Without these terrific performances this movie would die a horrible death.
Billy Crudup is great in one of the most unlikable characters I have ever seen on screen. He's a complete ass! Yes I realize he's supposed to be, but I found no enjoyment in witnessing a main character that I could really give a rat's ass what happens to. With that said, I don't blame him, but instead the overwritten script. I wanted to like this movie and there were moments I thought were going to make it work, but instead the movie ended and I groaned loudly at the fast acting ending.
Another real problem I had is the editing. Not that the editing was bad, but the style did not suit the movie at all. The quick flashes were annoying; I get what they were trying to do, but why!
This movie reeks of self righteous filmmaking and also the smell of a first feature film by the director. Nice try, but instead you just made me bitter like your main character. (D+).
