Review of Declaration of War (2011) by Dickie L — 13 Mar 2012
Don't be fooled by the cheery poster, Declaration of War is anything but a good time. The story of a young couple dealing with the a toddler son with cancer is unavoidably downbeat, despite the clunky shifts in tone.
For the first half hour or so I admired the obvious craftmanship on display, but when the two leads broke out into song it took me right out of the film and I never got back into it. All I could think about is maybe if they stopped smoking so much their kid wouldn't have got sick in the first place.
This has been a huge critical and commercial success in France, so clearly I'm in the minority on this one.
