Review of Deception (2008) by Dan Y — 06 Apr 2009
What at first appeared to be some kind of Basic Instinct/Sliver wannabe ended up being a fine thriller. Hugh Jackman is a total prick in this and it's really something different for him given the virtuous roles he usually has, such as the hardened Wolverine or Nicole Kidman's play thing in Australia.
Jonathan McQuarry ( Ewan McGregor) is a number cruncher who has a boring life, he works, he goes home and that's it. Jackman introduces himself as Wyatt Bose, a successful lawyer and through a cell phone mix-up, Jonathan discovers 'The List', a super secret directory for anonymous sexual encounters. It's something he's never experienced before, beautiful women who want to be with him. Bose is aware of the mix up and encourages McQuarry to partake in it all, but little does he know that Bose has other reasons. It's no accident that they met and that their phones got switched. I'll leave it at that since things get most intriguing after about an hour.
