TV.

I'm staggered that an actor of the calibre of Tim Roth hasn't got a higher profile. In this dark and moody independent offering, he plays an Absinthe-addicted highly intelligent epiliptic who's the chief suspect in the grisly murder of a prostitute. With a cast that reads like a casting director's dream; Chris Penn, Michael Rooker, Renee Zellweger and Rosanna Arquette all lending Roth magnificent support it's a wonder that this film flopped back in 1997. Reminiscent of a film noir both in tone and of the dark hued palette adopted by the directing (and writing) Pate brothers, this is a complicated and ultimately rewarding journey. Roth maintains a flawless American accent throughout and truly menaces as the spoiled rich kid turned drop-out. This was called 'Liar' when broadcast on British TV and just who that moniker belongs to is the heart of the movie. Renee Zellweger has little to do as the Lady of the NIght who comes a-cropper but does much with what little she has. Worth seeking out.
