Review of Deceived (1991) by Jay N — 20 Mar 2008
Back when Goldie Hawn was one of the top draws in movie making, she had a year when she released three movies - a comedy, a drama and a mystery. This would be the mystery. It is a wonderfully under rated and not oft seen thriller that, slowly, unveils the secrets and STILL manages to keep you breathless. Her work is intense, the film making dark and brooding, John Heard is sexy and mysterious, the score is haunting and clawing. And then there are the New York location shots - Yeah Baby!
I will say this: in the 90s when this was released, it was a scary little picture. Now, after some of the scary suspense thrillers that have been made in the last (almost) two decades, people may not be QUITE as apt to be scared by it.
But I still am.
