Review of Deathtrap (1982) by Dustin G — 08 Apr 2010
I would've liked this movie a lot better if not for a very disappointing plot twist a third of the way through that I think is less about making sense than trying to shock the audience for the sake of shocking the audience.
Other than that it's an entertaining movie though. It's based on a popular stage play and while it feel a lot like you're watching a play and you get the feeling Lumet just filmed the stage script as it was, you also kinda feel like it might work better as a play than a movie.
Michael Caine is, as always, completely flawless, Christopher Reeve is also great. It's interesting to note that he was between Superman I and II when he made this. A very different choice for him considering the blockbusters it was sandwiched between.
The ending's a big letdown, and that ridiculous plot twist I mentioned earlier doesn't do it any favours, but Deathtrap is pretty good, entertaining enough for a lazy day afternoon.
