Review of Deathgasm (2015) by Greg C — 08 Dec 2015
New Zealand brought us one of the goriest horror/comedy film ever made with Peter Jackson's Braindead. Twenty-three years later, Deathgasm pays a gory homage to the over-the-top horror classics. The film centers around two metalheads fighting off their possessed neighbors. Think Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny meets Evil Dead 2.
Brodie (Milo Cawthorne) and his brother-in-metal Zakk (James Blake) create the ultimate garage band called Deathgasm. They soon retrieve a satanic sheet music that transforms everyone in ear distance into demons when played. Brodie and Zakk must use the power and metal and friendship to defeat these demons.
Deathgasm is a outrageous, midnight feature right in time for the Halloween season. I am a huge fan of "buckets of blood" entertainment, as long as it is done with humor and wit. Deathgasm is just that. Hilarious and smart. The film does have its imperfections. Just like the few scratches on your favorite classic vinyl. The second act moves a bit slow for my taste, but once the third act kicks in, strap in. They they turn it up to eleven.
Once again indie horror proves that smaller is not always a bad thing. Low budget experiences like Deathgasm is why I love this genre. This is one of those films you won't be forgetting anytime soon. If October is the month you try to cram in as much horror films as possible, make sure you make room for this bad ass gore-fest. It will be the most "metal" thing you do this month.
