Review of Death Wish (2018) by Nitpicker . — 09 May 2018
Bruce Willis turns to vigilante justice after criminals attack his family.
What I liked.
- Good job for a remake.
Nitpicks.
- Lacks the fear of the original.
- Bruce Willis' stoic performance.
Final Thoughts.
It was a lot better than I expected.
What's missing is the real fear of crime in 1970's New York. Seventy-five percent of New Yorkers were afraid to go out at night. As the movie clearly stated, the police only arrive after the crime has been committed. Having little confidence in the NYPD, people considered they would need a gun to protect themselves. The original director Michael Winner talked to people at a New York police station who told him what they really needed was an execution squad.
All that real fear has been cast aside for an action movie. The street thugs come off as cannon fodder for Willis who became a marksman overnight with the help of a montage. I remember being scared for Charles Bronson as he roamed the New York streets and when he encountered the street trash. Those actors looked like hoodlums you would see in the street. These guys don't look threatening to me.
The question is still here with us 45 years later. Don't you have the right to protect yourself?
The critics who gave it a 17% don't think you do.
