"Death Wish" isn't exactly a revenge film. It's more. Bronson's vigilante actions aren't an effort at vengeance; they're an outlet for his frustrations. It's a film about grief, and dealing with it.
And while "Death Wish" does slide into conventional action movie tropes at times, it's quick to escape them in a following scene.
