Review of Death Wish (1974) by Troy F — 18 May 2012
An absolute classic revenge flick that was a turning point in graphic cinema. The simple setup of a wronged man seeking revenge is a staple of cinema but to take it to the lengths that Winner did was unprecedented.
Lashings of social commentary and rhetoric expertly raise the questions a film such as this should ask of an audience while delivering the fantasy fulfillment. The film leaves you to ponder if his actions begat even more violence than it possibly cures.
An interesting first performance by Jeff Goldblum is just the icing on the bloody cake.
