Review of Death Wish (1974) by David B — 05 Apr 2013
Michael Winners original vigilante thriller starring Charles Bronson is nothing short of good old simple action. Similar to Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry franchise, the Death Wish films are about one man and his gun.
The killings are ruthless and the on screen violence even by today's standards is realistic and controversial. There's no big set pieces or edge of the seat excitement, but Death Wish is dark and suspenseful throughout.
Charles Bronson is so cool in the leading role of Paul Kersey and goes above the law to seek revenge for the murder of his wife and brutal raping of his daughter by street thugs. By todays standards Death Wish has dated considerably.
Despite the four sequels of mixed quality that have spawned since, this first original instalment is by far the most memorable and best instalment of the franchise.
