Review of Death to Smoochy (2002) by Inta K — 27 Jun 2010
OK. This is one of those movies like Brazil or Dark City where you need to completely be open minded about what is going on. I originally refused to see this movie, but I made a deal with a friend of mine that if they would try a peanut butter and banana sandwich if I would watch it.
To say the least, when the movie was over I could only say, "WTF was that" over and over until it sunk in that I had just watched a master piece which was completely under-rated and mis-understood.
This movie is so full of funny stuff that you will miss it if you blink for even a second. If you aren't open to the possibilities and ignorant as I was for many years, you will totally hate this movie. Watch it clear of any other influences and give it a chance to work.
It's a very deep movie underneath while filled with silly and corny surface material on top. Robin Williams and Ed Norton are masters at work and from what I understand there was a lot of "ad-libbing" in this movie.
A classic sleeper. It is in my top 200 movies and in my collection. I recommend watching it at least once.
