Review of Death Sentence (2007) by Benedick L — 01 Jul 2009
Death Sentence: title of the film or a statement about Kevin Bacon's film career? To me, Bacon is a good actor, more decent than most out there, he just picks the wrong projects and this one is no exception. Death sentence does have one particular amazing chase sequence in it that really stands out in the film but the rest of the film falls to cliche and well trodden plot devices to deliver it's sense of fun.
This would have been better if the focus wasn't on the fact Bacon's character, Nick Hume, was a mild mannered ordinary man. Even when pushed to the extreme, can a mild mannered ordinary man do the things Hume does? The arguments of suspension of disbelief is throw out of the window when we are asked for this. Hume gets a lot of guns and then knows how to shoot them like an army soldier.
I am sying to see a good vigalante film with a good amount of violence delivered to well deserved baddies. It's not asking for the world for such a simple premise and before people query my criticism of this film and say "why don't you do better?" I could if given the right amount of money and equipment and people. Easily.
The film borders on entertaining but the srt pieces are few and far between so I only recommend this film should it arise on television. Other then that, there is a lot better out there.
