Review of Death Rides a Horse (1967) by Clinton V — 01 Jul 2009
Unfortunately for me, the star attraction, Van Cleef, seems to play second fiddle to John Phillip Law in this film. Law has none of the rough charm of Eastwood and isn't really threatening enough as the man driven by revenge. Having said that this "Leone-lite" Spag Western ticks all the right boxes and even brings in Pistilli and Brega who you'll recongise from the Dollars Trilogy.
The soundtrack isn't on a par with Morricone's best work but does have a chaotic charm that suits the subject matter. Petroni should also gain points with modern audiences for inspiring the "angry flashback" shots recently used in Kill Bill.
A harsh and brutal film with a few flashes of humour, the chemistry between Van Cleef and Law is never given enough time and the mutiple bad guys needed more development.
Having said that, being compared to Leone's work is never going to be easy and this film still looks the part even if it misses an epic feel. Definately worth a look as there is a lot to enjoy.
