Review of Death Race (2008) by Christopher J — 25 Dec 2011
A flawless exploitation film, a non-existent story line, over the top violence and machismo. This is a film that knows what it's roots are and pays homage to them very well. Obnoxious metal and rap thunder from the speakers mixing with profanities, one-liners, machine guns, and explosions.
This colorless world is a fun one to visit, but of course you wouldn't want to live there. The spooky part, how far are we really from this level of reality TV? Finally a film from Paul W.S. Anderson I can truly enjoy and call great.
Just a refresher he's responsible from a hitlist of dreck like "Resident Evil," "Alien v. Predator," "Event Horizon" and "Mortal Kombat." A man with vision and talent who finally came into his own.
The high point of this film is Joan Allen, many may say she's slumming it in this pic, but she plays a villain to such perfection, her contempt and self-appreciation ooze off the screen, well done Mrs.
Allen, again I applaud you.
