Review of Death Race (2008) by Jeff G — 06 Sep 2010
Death Race has the thrills of the original, but lacks the dialogue and humor, which is a shame with the cast it sports.
There's nothing like having such greats as McShane trying to say stupid one-liners that aren't funny. Death Race just totally flips the bird to it's actors and says "this is all about the action". While the action is entertaining, Anderson forgets about the other dimensions of film-making. But, let's not expect too much out of Anderson, he did make such crap as AVP, Event Horizon, and many others in the crap pile as a producer.
I don't know what it is, but guys just love watching Statham brutally murder people on screen. The more he does it, the more we like him. He basically doesn't even act anymore, he just does movies like these. It's a shame, because he started out as such a good actor in Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. But, everyone sells out at some point right? We all have a price.
Now where this movie gets all it's marks is the stylish brutality with the racing. You know this isn't a good movie, but it's a blast to just sit and watch as all the racers in this event go down, all in Final Destination styled ways that make you laugh.
So if you're finding yourself bored one day and you're looking for some mindless fun I do recommend Death Race. Well, Death Race 2000 that is.
