Review of Death Race (2008) by Ed Fucking H — 31 May 2011
60% is a rating I give to movie I found fun and entertaining above being action packed, exhilarating, thrilling, and over the top, death race definitely is a fun ride, that keeps your heart beating non stop.
In 2012 the economy crashed, crime rates flew, and the prison industry crashed. So the prison industry started to pin players against each other in cage matches to the death. But audiences began to tire of this, so they invented death race, a three stage process for prisoners to win their freedom. The first two stages consist of driving, but mostly trying to survive and eliminate the competition. It is only in the third and final stages were speed matters. If you 5 death races you win your freedom. The fan favorite driver Frankenstein died in a brutal crash. So when Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) is framed for killing his wife, the warden of the prison (Joan Allen) proposes that Jensen poses as frank, he's hesitant until hr hears that frank had won 4 races. So if Jensen wins one more race, he agrees.
This is a fairly simple premise, what could be more exciting that a race with cars that all have guns, bombs, and rockets racing to the death. Throughout the film we see plenty of awesome explosions, shootouts, and crashes. This film just screamed excitement, it is one thing that matters in an action film, and that's that its memorable days after I watched it the action scenes were still in my head, I didn't care that the performances were overall just mediocre, because they were all entertaining and somewhat believable.
Jason Statham has a great action persona. He is believable as an awesome, cool, action hero, he is somehow relatable, which isn't an easy task when hes running around blowing up cars and pulling off amazing and over the top stunts.
The entire film was thrilling and entertaining. I highly recommend it, it has a great premise, amazing stunt work, and anybody who loves action movies, or car chases will love this film.
