Review of Death Race (2008) by Petrika T — 02 Feb 2011
It is what it is: a formulaic, obvious, prison-meets-racing film where the plot is silly, the action more than decent and some head-scratching casting (as in: why is Joan Allen in this film? Doesn't she have an agent?).
I've seen worse films, but I'm not giving this film a pass - it should have been better. Just 'cause it's a silly action film, doesn't mean it can't be smart. It shows promise, but the set-up, villain, and ending just suck too hard.
I'm a Jason Statham fan, but I could have done without this page of his career. Tyrese Gibson shows he can hold his own in action films (see Too Fast Too Furious, too).
