Review of Death Race 2000 (1975) by Ray D — 28 Aug 2009
Innocently Subversive (Subversively Innocent?) dystopian-road movie satire from the mid-70's, produced by Roger Corman, naturally, that manages to be endearing in spite of (because of?) it's very low budget.
The film features David Carradine right after his starmaking KUNG FU turn had ended, as one of several drivers taking part in a cross-country Death Race for ratings, where the winner gets to meet the president--a young Sylvester Stallone as his nemesis is kind of amazingly bad as the villain.
For an interesting illustration on how approaches to this sort of material have changed over the years, check out the Jason Statham remake, which feels like a very different animal.
