Review of Death Proof (2007) by Andy H — 07 Apr 2012
Death Proof is an extremely well done film. I have read a lot of critic reviews and many criticisms seem to be pointed at the fact that there is too much "girl talk" and not a whole lot of gore.
This is the only thing that I think hurts Death Proof as a whole is that it was played right after Planet Terror. I was watching Grindhouse with some of my friends not that long ago, and they really enjoyed Planet Terror, but when Death Proof came I could sense boredom because it was not as over the top as Planet Terror was.
Back to what I was saying about the critics, the "girl talk" I think really fits well into this movie. You have to feel connected to the victims of Stuntman Mike otherwise there is no drama, there is no suspense.
Nothing is at stake. By the time you get to the climactic car chase, you are so invested in this group of women that you really want to see them defeat Stuntman Mike. And as far as the gore goes, this is a completely different type of movie.
This is not a shock piece, this is more of a realistic thriller piece. Could there have been more kills? Probably. But I feel like the car chase at the end of the movie makes up for all of that. That was one of the best car chases I have ever seen in my life.
It completely blew me away. This movie always seems to get a bad rap and I have never really figured out why. I would highly recommend this movie to any fan of Grindhouse films, or Tarantino films. It is superb.
