Review of Death Proof (2007) by William W — 15 Jan 2013
As much as I enjoy Tarantino, this homage to grindhouse exploitation had a little too much of his stamp on it -- mainly the dialogue style -- to be considered the throwaway pulp I was expecting it to be.
Tarantino didn't seem to commit to the psuedo-vintage nature of the project the same way Rodriguez did in his half of the double feature, Planet Terror. However, once the action started, once the the brilliantly creepy Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike started seducing and running down those girls in his "death-proof" hot rod, the limbs started flying and it was non-stop thrills until the end.
Thoroughly fun and entertaining, and probably worth a second viewing, even if I may be tempted to fast-forward through the first half hour jibber-jabbering.
