Review of Death Proof (2007) by Lewis E — 29 Mar 2015
Natural-flowing dialogue, extended scenes with subtle tension and a mysteriously cool Kurt Russell gives 'Death Proof' Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's trademark feel. Unfortunately it stalls when the second group of girls enters, making it into a movie of two halves.
Their OTT acting and conversations of sexual promiscuity fail to hold interest and shrink in comparison to character interactions from 'Reservoir Dogs' or 'Pulp Fiction'. The almost horror atmosphere created by the lurking Kurt Russell maintains the expectation that something violently cool will happen but, despite a car chase with semi-entertaining moments, it ends with a cringy anti-climax.
Stylish touches from the directors sometimes makes 'Death Proof' an intriguing watch but its lack of narrative and key set-pieces means it most certainly ranks lowest out of the Tarantino's films.
